The seven seater segment is not known for being the trendiest end of the market and an MPV tends to be a car that you need rather than want to buy. Certain models make that prospect a little bit less scary though, like this new Volkswagen Touran – which as people carriers go, isn't a bad looking machine at all. Now based on the same MQB platform as the Golf – its sleek new lines give it a neater, more car-like look, despite the fact that its actually bigger inside than the last one. Its greatest feat is the ability to fit three full size car seats across the middle row, and if you're crazy enough not to stop at three, another two will fit in the seats behind them. There's not a whole lot of bootspace with the rearmost seats up, but fold them down and keep them for occasional use and you've got a huge 743 litres of space to fill with all the gear that tiny people tend to come with. A good range of fuel-efficient engines and a generous spec complete an altogether fine package. Go for the larger wheels and tinted windows on the Highline for some real Daddy-cool.
