Volvo XC70 (07 - Present)
The Volvo XC70 is basically a V70 with a couple of extra inches ground clearance, some rugged plastic bumpers and the option of four-wheel drive. The XC70 comes with a range of diesel and petrol engines to suit most needs, starting with a 1.6 litre diesel with 115bhp all the way up to the Porsche bothering T6, with a 3 litre twin turbo petrol engine. The mid-range 2.0 diesel probably strikes the best balance between performance and economy, serving up 161bhp and roughly 40mpg. Unsurprisingly the build quality in the XC70 is amongst the best in its class; the buttons and switches are a tad "old-school" but are effective and easy to use. The handling could be described as competent, such a large vehicle with a raised ride height was never going to set the world alight in terms of cornering. Comfort is where the XC70 really excels absorbing bumps with ease, you could cover many miles in one go and arrive feeling refreshed. Also, if you are prone to back problems the seats are unbeatable, as with most Volvos.
