Volkswagen Up! (12 - Present)
It may only be around since 2012, but already the Up! has become the benchmark for everything a small city car should be. It ticks all the usual boxes that its rivals do – it’s small, green, and cheap to run - you could even call it ‘cute’, but the stylish reliability that the VW badge represents lends the Up! a certain credibility that its rivals can only dream of. It is positively minuscule on the outside, but shockingly roomy once you step inside. The nippy 1.0 petrol 3 cylinder petrol engine ensures a refined ride both on the city streets it was designed for, and out on the open road. The boot is the biggest in its class and the option of a 5 door version makes it a viable and even attractive choice for a small family car. CarsIreland.ie verdict: one of the most practical city cars out there at the moment.
