Volvo C30 (07 - 12)
Volvo stepped out of their comfort zone with the C30. Better known for building spacious and practical cars, this was the first three-door hatch they produced since the 480 back in 1986. It aimed at competing directly with the likes of the Volkswagen Scirocco and the BMW 1 Series coupe. It looks well, helped by the fact it is a three door. It’s reminiscent of the classic 1800ES shooting brake from 1971. You can tell Volvo drew inspiration from it with the curves and lines on the bodywork which give it an almost muscular appearance, particularly from the broad shoulders. For a three-door, it’s not spacious like other Volvos, but there is plenty of room for the four passengers. The interior styling is neat and tidy. The materials used feel robust and solid. On the road, it handles well. The steering feels sharp, and the ride is really smooth. The engine selection may not be the biggest, but there are some excellent ones there that deliver impressive mpg.
